The year 2014 was very challenging but very rewarding for the Philippine Animal Rescue Team (PART). It was busy working towards its goals of building a better shelter in Bulacan for homeless and rescued animals, called Paws and Claws Animal Shelter (PCAS).
Through my ever-reliable vet Mayem Yao of Pendragon Veterinary Clinic, I was informed that as of Dec. 31, 2014, PART was able to rescue and help 150 animals.
“This year also started on a positive note,” said Doc Mayem. “PART was able to put in place new standard operating procedures for PCAS.”
Mayem added that with the news this SOP, PART now has a new medical standard for new rescues, which it credits to the collective knowledge and experience of the new board and help and expertise of Pendragon Veterinary Clinic.
“In February last year, PART and Pendragon Veterinary Clinic embarked on our biggest project, the construction of PCAS in Bulacan. We completed Phase 1 of the project and Phase 2 is currently ongoing,” added Doc Mayem. “With Phase 2, we were able to expand the kennels from an area size of 20x20 meters to its current size of 60x60 meters. We were also able to secure and fence in all the play areas, including the ones for our senior and special needs fur kids. We were also able to construct four new catteries where our kittens and cats will permanently live until they find their fur-ever home.”
GOALS FOR 2015
PART wants to be financially capable this year so that it can maintain PCAS. It is common knowledge that most animal shelters rely on donations, which oftentimes can be hard to come by. With over 200 rescued dogs, cats and even turkeys living in the sanctuary, securing the financial future of this home is one of our PART’s top priorities.
PART has joined forces with Pets and Peeps, a pet store that will open in March. For every purchase made, Pets and Peeps will donate 25 percent of their monthly net profit to PCAS.
Of course, donations continue to come. Among these are fruit- bearing trees, vegetables seedlings and herbs. To make PART fun, the sanctuary will also be open to people who want to experience fruit and vegetable-picking. PART will also sell fresh fruits and vegetables to raise funds.
As for activities and events, 2015 will see PART focus on its community outreach and rescue education (CORE) program in schools, barangays and government agencies. PART will continue its work in its Spay and Neuter Importance (SNIP) Program for strays.
