It’s always a joy to have friends and family come visit, and more often than not we are happy to find a place in our home for them to stay even if it’s on the couch. Having them in your home really maximizes your time together, bonding over coffee and breakfast or long conversations after dinner with some wine. It can, however, be stressful for both host and guest when not organized properly.
In our last episode of Modern Living TV, we tackled this issue through our very first makeover. Interior designer Anla Li-Tan re-purposed a small space in a private home and turned it into a wonderful guest room cozy enough to rival a hotel room.
The key word here is cozy! Anla points out that we want guests to feel welcome and at ease. “I suggest playing with texture — soft fluffy pillows and an area rug will instantly give any space a cozy feel,” she says. “Warm lighting is also important. You want them to relax and unwind.”

Here are some more tips on how to make your guests feel right at home.
Give them their own space
While we may not all have the luxury of having a guest room, make sure they have at least a corner where they can store their things, have some privacy and unwind. It could be an armchair and a table, a shelf or a drawer.
Provide amenities
They might have left their toothbrush or shaving cream back home, it’s best to provide a little basket with the essentials so they don’t have to bother asking where to buy or if they can borrow.
Optional schedules
Write them a welcome letter stating where everything is, inviting them to feel at home but above all relaying your daily schedules. What time you usually take your meals, when you leave and come back from work etc... And if they want to join you or not in certain activities. You can also let them know how things work and what they might find in the fridge in case they get hungry and suggest some sightseeing or touring options. This really makes guests feel welcome and not like they are imposing.
Relaxing ambience
A nice scented candle, some magazines and books, a TV with a stack of DVDs. Anything that helps them unwind after a long trip. How about numbers for a home service massage?
Luggage storage
A small foldable luggage stand is easy to purchase and practical! That way guests don’t have to keep their things on the floor.
Personalization
A small token like their favorite chocolates or a framed photo of you and your guest together on the night table will instantly make them feel right at home and happy they are visiting!
