The French invasion of Cebu

One of the most lighthearted and playful rituals in the wine world is the “Beaujolais Nouveau Festival,” which is celebrated on the third Thursday of November.

This much-anticipated, truly French tradition, which has become a worldwide phenomenon found its way at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel Cebu with the French community and Cebu’s glittering society in full attendance.

With this year’s theme, “Monte Carlo” the spacious foyer was bedecked with a couple of games of chance such as roulette, baccarat, and blackjack. After the invitees got their fill of make-believe winnings and losses, they were ushered into the Grand, which had a huge picturesque canvas of the Maritime Alps along the French Riviera.

The festivities began with the ceremonial uncorking of the first bottle by guests of honor, Governor Gwen Garcia and French Honorary Consul Michel Lhuillier. They were ably assisted by Marco Polo general manager Hans Hauri.

A parade of well-organized waiters then shared the young wine for the customary toast to good health, flavorful wine and great company. After a brief interlude to appreciate the fine French dishes masterfully created by executive chef Karl  Beter and his efficient team, guests  were entertained by magicians who were flown all the way from France and by versatile performer Giselle Sanchez. Capping the night on a high note was the popular On the Cover Band, which provided dance music for everyone to enjoy.

On a side note, the frantic race from grapes to wines that do not have the lineage of a classic wine,  may be a bit irrational, but the fun is in knowing that on the same night, in homes, restaurants, cafes, bistros and bars around  the globe, the same celebration is taking place.

The host for the evening was Philippine STAR  columnist Johnny Litton, who steered the flow of activities, which  culminated in the raffling of 60,000 worth of Asia Miles to any chosen destination. The lucky winner was hotel guest  Sasha Sahara, who was in Cebu for a brief holiday. What a splendid holiday it turned out to be!
