Classic Formula One cars in KL

MANILA, Philippines - Fans of the Formula One World Championship are now able to take a close look at history as Sepang International Circuit displays classic Formula One racing cars in conjunction with the 2010 Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix.

One of the cars on display is the Benetton B192, the first car that brought together the talents of technical director Ross Brawn, designer Rory Byrne and then-new German driver Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher won his first Grand Prix at Spa in the sister car to Benetton B192 and drove this chassis to second in the Australian Grand Prix and finished third overall in the World Championship in 1992.

Since then, Schumacher has gone on to win the Formula One World Championship seven times over, making him the undisputed king of Formula One.

Also on display is the Lotus type 99T, chassis no. 4, the actual car driven by the late Formula One World champion Ayrton Senna to victory in the 1987 Monaco and Detroit Grand Prix. The victory in Monaco was his first.

The 99T/4 was exclusively driven by Senna and had completed 6,129 miles during the 1987 season.

Members of the public will be able to view the cars at the entrance of Pavilion KL and KLIA. The cars were flown into Malaysia by MASkargo, while the cars’ mechanics and the owners are flown in by Malaysia Airlines.

The 2010 Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix will be held from April 2 to 4 at the Sepang International Circuit, and the starting time is 4 p.m. The event will feature Wyclef Jean and Fatboy Slim to entertain the crowd on April 4.
