MANILA, Philippines - Joe Landolina discovered an algae-based compound that can stop profuse bleeding in few seconds and can fully heal a wound in few minutes.

Landolina, a 22-year-old who is now the CEO of a biotech company, initially discovered the lifesaving compound dubbed as "VetiGel" inside his grandfather's laboratory when he was just seventeen years old.

At present, Landolina has managed to turn the prototype into a business.

According to Landolina, the gel forms into mesh that holds the damaged tissues together. His company describes it as "a gel that activates blood's natural clotting process."

"What that means, on the one hand, is that the gel will make a very strong adhesive that holds the wound together," Landolina told Business Insider. "But on the other hand, that mesh acts as a scaffold to help the body produce fibrin at the wound's surface," he added.

The polymerized fibrin together with platelets forms a clot over a wound site.

As of now, the product is designed exclusively for veterinarians. The company has already partnered with VetPlus, a British company focused on animal  medicine for market expansion.

The gel’s use on human wounds are expected to be approved by the FDA in the next year.
