MANILA, Philippines - A dozen scholars at Dance 116 for ballroom dancing, all underprivileged children, were honed since they were seven years old. Emily Silva, owner of Dance Team 116, had them trained and sees to it that they continue schooling, too. And these children are in serious training for a dance presentation on Thursday, November 15, at 8 p.m. at the Music Museum.
Original Filipino music like Ugoy Ng Duyan will be danced to waltz; Ikaw ay Akin to tango; traditional slow Buhat to lively cha cha; and Ikaw Pa Rin to samba through the genius adaptation of Norie Sayo, director and musical arranger.
The Friends of Dance Team 116, led by the vision of Emily Silva, hopes to take the young off the streets on to a productive life through dance. Their mission is to produce national and international champions in dance sports. Their vision is to nurture individuals towards becoming productive, self-supporting with integrity and strong moral values.
Awit at Sayaw will raise funds for these dance athletes. The two-and-a-half-hour musical and dance production will highlight the talents of these underprivileged children and everlasting star Pilita Corrales, Dr. Nonoy Zuniga, and Filipino tenors Miguel Castro, Johann Enriquez, David Ezra Cruz, Christian Nagano, and Jenmai de Asis.
