Rustan's Supermarket: A fair to remember

To the supermarket we shall go. And if you want a truly super experience, you know that the place to go is Rustan’s Supermarket, what with its doubly super Foodie Fair ongoing until September 8. Think exclusive and delicious products at even more delicious discounts, such as up to 30-percent off on pastries, chocolates, candies, and ice cream, Now, how cool is that?

If you missed the Sweet Surrender promo last week, you’ll be delighted to know that July 15-28 has been tagged as Delightfully Deli, with a hefty assortment of deli meat treats and cheeses. Here, you learn the fine art of mixing and matching meats and cheeses from the various regions of the world. So, don’t just say “Cheese!” Enjoy it, too!

“You should try the Malagos cheese (from pure and fresh goat’s milk from the Malagos Farmhouse in Davao),” Frances Yu, Rustan’s Supermarket EVP-marketing, teases our taste buds.

The Malagos cheese comes in many yummy variants. And to make the experience even more cheesy, there are the well-loved imported cheeses like Brie de Mieaux, mozzarella, Manchego Semi Curado, and feta cheese in oil and herbs.

Here’s a hot tip: There are product samples that you can try for each week of the fair: Sweet Surrender, Delightfully Deli, Health is Wealth, Chef Essentials, and La Vino Loca. I was lucky to have caught up with the Sweet Surrender week and did I surrender to all the sweet temptations laid out at the promo counter — chocolates, candies, cookies, etc. from around the world!

And here’s one word to beef up your food vocabulary — charcuterie. Charcute what? These are sliced cold cuts that you must have nibbled on at assorted parties. They’re meat specialties like pates (well-seasoned ground meat preparations), rillettes (meat slowly cooked in seasoned fat and made into paste), galantines (meat-wrapped pates), and crepinettes (small sausages made of minced pork, beef, lamb, veal, chicken or truffles). Until tomorrow, July 21, shoppers can sample delectable deli choices — from cold cuts (like Jamon Serrano and beef pastrami) to sausages (like Hungarian that can make you really hungry and Schublig, among other fresh and succulent European sausages that are better eaten than pronounced), to air-dried meats (like salami and pepperoni).

From July 29 to August 11, go organic as Rustan’s gives a 20-percent discount on premium organic and healthy products, fresh fruits, and vegetables. You can have a field day snapping up bargains from Full Circle (like sauces and soups, preserves and spreads); Amy’s Kitchen, a soup-er attraction for vegetarians with its heartwarming soups; and Rustan’s fresh fruit and vegetable offerings.

If you care enough about your health, organic is the way to go. For instance, if you’re buying eggs at Rustan’s Supermarket, go for the free-range organic eggs, which are less likely to be contaminated by salmonella — more, it has 1/4 less saturated fat, 1/3 less cholesterol and yes, 2/3 more vitamin A, twice as much omega-3, three times more vitamin E, and seven times more beta carotene.

Also, add some healthy greens to your anemic diet. Grab some organically grown spinach that’s loaded with vitamins, fiber, protein, zinc, copper, omega-3, and a lot more. Now you know why Popeye loves a good can of spinach and a good brawl.

From August 12 to 25, stock up on pantry essentials — sauces, mixes, and condiments that homemakers worth their salt shouldn’t be without — and imported hard-to-find ingredients, offered at 20-percent off. Go the extra mile for health and get yourself some extra virgin olive oil — it’s a healthy substitute for butter or margarine. Or for something sweeter, go for the sherry vinegar — it adds some zing to your salads and fish. My sherry amour!

And to cap this two-month one-of-a-kind food fair to remember, get intoxicating discounts of up to 30 percent on premium wines from France, Australia, New Zealand, California, South Africa, Chile, Italy, Spain, and North America, and five-percent off on local and imported liquor. Who wouldn’t go loco over the La Vino Loca promo (August 26 to September 8)?

“We’re also launching our own gravlax (salmon cured with salt, pepper, dill, and aquavit),” Frances shares more delicious tidings from Rustan’s Supermarket. “We’ll have fresh corned beef, Reuben sandwich, and handmade pasta, a first in any supermarket in the Philippines.”

And finally, to spice things up even more, Rustan’s is holding the Ultimate Food Trip raffle offering shoppers the chance to win plane tickets to the most exotic destinations around the world. How’d you like to go to Singapore or Vietnam or Hong Kong or Australia? Or fly to Rome for a romantic Roman holiday? Indeed, a trip to Rustan’s Supermarket can take you on a trip to another country.

Now, can going to the supermarket get any more super than this?
