Leon Gallery holds ‘The Magnificent September Auction’

The Juvenal Sanso painting from the collection of Don Luis Ma. Araneta is from the “Black Period” when Sanso was in Paris.

MANILA, Philippines -  Works by National Artists and contemporary masters will be auctioned off by Leon Gallery in “The Magnificent September Auction 2014” on Sept. 13, 2 p.m. at Eurovilla 1, Rufino corner Legaspi Streets, Legaspi Village, Makat City.

This is perhaps the biggest assembly of very important works in a single sale for Leon Gallery. The importance of the works is matched by the provenances from where the collections came from such as Don Alfonso Ongpin, Don Anselmo Trinidad, Don Luis Ma. Araneta, Dr. Alejandro Roces, and Tony and Cez Gutierrez.

The catalog cover is Anita Magsaysay-Ho’s “Women with Baskets and Mangoes,” considered a complete work that showcases the artists virtuosity in capturing baskets that loom in the different periods of the artists oeuvre as well as the mangoes that is a produce of her beloved Zambales that endeared her to dedicate the piece, “This is for you, I’m very happy with the work,” to the lady who would own it for 35 years.

Ang Kiukok’s “Still Life: Table” from 1970 is a masterwork of an early period that defines Kiukok’s cubist influence from his Paris excursion in 1965. The raw composition of geometric planes expresses the artist’s infusion of the Chinese brush tradition to his approach in painting.

“Vendors” by Manansala from 1972 is a rare glimpse of a painting that is normally limited to the best homes and collections of Manila.  It is a rare opportunity to take home such a highly important piece that punctuates the height of transparent cubism.

The Juvenal Sanso from the collection of Don Luis Ma. Araneta is from the “Black Period” when he was in Paris. An extraordinary piece that typifies the figurative phase of Sanso in a major scale, it is considered by experts to be an exceptional work.

The Mauro Malang Santos from the collection of Angel and Carmen Guerrero Nakpil is an exemplification of Malang’s woman figure with the “kendi” of a vendor of the typical Quiapo market scene.  A 1975 magnum opus of the artist is a stunning addition to the 164 lots that will be up for auction.

Preview of works is ongoing until Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Catalog access is at www.leon-gallery.com.  For information, call 856-2781.
