Instituto Cervantes presents forum on fiction-writing

MANILA, Philippines - Instituto Cervantes de Manila, in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in the Philippines and AECID, presents “Encuentros en la narrativa: Writing Fiction Today,” a forum with Spanish novelist Ruben Abella and Filipino writer Sarge Lacuesta, to be held tomorrow, 7 p.m. at the Instituto Cervantes’ Salón de Actos.

“Encuentros en la narrativa: Writing Fiction Today” is an exciting way to gain insight in the minds of the two talented and promising writers. The forum will be an opportunity for fans and newcomers alike to exchange their ideas, with Rubén Abella and Sarge Lacuesta, about the changing trends in literature, fictional writing, their personal works and so much more. The audience is also more than welcome to participate in the whole event.

Rubén Abella is one of the most promising up and coming Spanish writers. With a degree in English Philology and a professor of literature in the Universidad Pontificia Comillas and the Escuela de Escritores in Madrid , Abella is able to marry literature, education and art into each of his profound works. One of it which, It Wouldn’t Have Been The Same Without The Rain (No habría sido igual sin la lluvia), talks about the journey of human life and contradiction illustrated through stories, photographs and memoirs. His novels The Shadow of the Escapist (La sombre del escapista) and The Book On Elusive Love have both be critically acclaimed, receiving the Narrativa Torrente Ballester award in 2002 and becoming a finalist of the Nadal Award in 2009.

Sarge Lacuesta, a well-known Filipino writer, has produced numerous award-winning short stories. His first collection, Life Before X and Other Stories, received the Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award as well as the Manila Critics’ Circle National Book Award. While his second collection, White Elephants: Stories, won the National Book Award. He is a former literary editor of the Philippines Free Press and is currently editor-at-large of Esquire Philippines. He is also a consultant for the Film Development Council of the Philippines. 

This forum has been organized by Instituto Cervantes de Manila in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in the Philippines , and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID).
