Ballet Manila holds summer workshop

MANILA, Philippines -  The Ballet Manila School, the educational arm of the country’s premiere classical ballet company, launches its annual summer workshop which will begin on April 5.

Classes being offered include daily classical ballet technique taught in five levels: Baby Ballet, Level 1A, Level 1B, Level 2 and Level 3. Level 2 has Beginner Pointe class; Level 3 has Variation and Pointe Class and Pas de Deux or Partnering Class. There will also be a Boys’ Class Beginners and Boys’ Class Advanced.

Classes will be held Tuesdays to Saturdays at the Ballet Manila studios at 1915 Donada Street, Pasay City.

Prima ballerina and BM artistic director Lisa Macuja-Elizalde leads the faculty roster which also includes BM’s seasoned dancers and teachers Osias Barroso, Eileen Lopez, Jonathan Janolo, Marika Capati, Czarina Villegas, Mylene Aggabao-Salgado, Jennifer Rose Olayvar, Elisha Soriano and Sofia Sangco-Peralta.

Auditions for half and full scholarships will be held on March 5 and 6. Registration will begin at 10 a.m., while the audition proper will be held from 12 noon to 1 p.m. There is a registration fee of P300. Applicants who do not qualify for scholarship may enroll as regular paying students for the workshop.

Summer workshop will culminate in a school recital dubbed “Just Dance,” to be presented on May 21 and 22 at the Aliw Theater. This year’s recital will feature The Four Seasons and a concert of different classical and contemporary pieces.

Interested parties are encouraged to enroll or reserve slots in advance as each class will only be limited to 20 students for a more effective instruction.

The Ballet Manila School offers package deals which include complimentary tickets to the recitals, costume rental, souvenir program pictorial and inclusion of photo, and other recital and miscellaneous fees plus tuition.

There are plans to hold adult ballet and yoga classes for all ages if there are sufficient numbers of enrollees.
