MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines and the United States have signed an agreement boosting efforts against the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB).

In announcing the signing of the five-year Health Strategic Objective Agreement, the US embassy described the initiative as another milestone in the history of US-Philippine health cooperation.

The agreement includes a jointly funded plan of up to P42 billion to improve and sustain the capacity to detect, treat and prevent HIV and TB as well as strengthen global health security.

It also intends to save American and Filipino lives, increase resiliency of the Philippine health system through coordinated funding, and promote innovations to slow down the spread of infectious diseases.
