Rich draft coming up

MANILA, Philippines — It won’t be slim pickings in the PBA draft on Jan. 17 as the expectation is teams will be choosing prospective blue-chippers all the way to the third round in what could be a rich harvest. The UAAP and NCAA seasons are now aligned to allow graduating players to join the draft with no conflict in playing schedules unlike in previous years.
Players who declined to join earlier drafts for the chance to go overseas may apply without restrictions. Two years of college are required for those who are 19. Application forms are available online or at the PBA office in Libis. For Fil-foreigners, a valid Philippine passport is required. Deadline for applications is on Jan. 8 at 5 pm.
The final draft order for the first round will be known at the end of the Governors’ Cup. However, the top three picks are assured for NLEX (from Blackwater) at first overall, Titan at second and Ginebra (from Terrafirma) at third. The order is determined by the finishes of each team with a 40 percent weight for the Philippine Cup and 30 percent for the Commissioner’s and Governors’ Cups. Picks are tradeable which is how NLEX and Ginebra secured their top three slots on the first round.
Among the hot picks from previous collegiate seasons are Kymani Ladi, Nic Cabanero, Ced Manzano, JD Cagulangan, Clint Escamis, Kean Baclaan, Raven Gonzales, Cholo Anonuevo, Harold Alarcon, John Abate, Forthsky Padrigao, Jake Figueroa, Reyland Torres, Patrick Sleat, Dom Escobar and Terrence Fortea. The graduating players include Mason Amos, Jacob Cortez, Noy Remogat, Gani Stevens, Allen Liwag, Justine Sanchez, Kevin Santos, Travis Roberts, JC Macalalag, PJ Panacielo, Kenshin Padrones, Jorick Bautista, T-Mc Ongotan, Monty Montebon, Paul Francisco, Jimel Puno, RC Calimag, LA Casinilio, Earl Abadam. Jhomel Ancheta and Matty Erolon. Then there are Fil-foreigners like DJ Fenner and Brandon Wilson. It’s rumored that Remy Martin, who played on the 2022 NCAA champion Kansas varsity, may also apply.
