DSWD-7 trains beneficiaries on nutrition, emergency preparedness
CEBU, Philippines — Beneficiaries of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Walang Gutom Program (WGP) are learning about proper nutrition and emergency preparedness through the Kalusugan, Kakayahan, at Kabuhayan (3K) sessions.
The DSWD Field Office 7, through its Community Engagement Coordinators and field staff, conducted Module 6: Nutrition in Emergencies among WGP beneficiaries in various municipalities and cities in Cebu and Bohol.
The sessions focused on the importance of maintaining proper nutrition and ensuring access to safe and nutritious food during emergencies and disasters, when food supplies and other basic necessities may become limited.
Beneficiaries were given practical guidance on choosing nutritious food, proper food storage, simple food preservation methods, and maintaining proper nutrition and breastfeeding during emergencies.
They also participated in scenario-based discussions where they identified possible responses to emergencies and how family members could work together during crises.
Among the emergencies discussed were typhoons, floods, storm surges, landslides, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, droughts, and fires.
The beneficiaries were also taught what to include in an emergency go bag, including drinking water, ready-to-eat food, medicines, a first aid kit, flashlight, whistle, radio, batteries, mobile phone and charging devices, important documents, cash, extra clothes, raincoat, sanitary supplies, and blanket.
The activity also emphasized the importance of distinguishing essential from nonessential items to help families prioritize what to bring when evacuating during emergencies.
Through the sessions and practical exercises, the DSWD said the WGP seeks to strengthen the preparedness of beneficiary households, help them make informed food and nutrition choices, and protect their health and well-being during emergencies. — /MRM (FREEMAN)
