Race to playoffs heats up as MPL PH reaches midway point
MANILA, Philippines — The race for playoff positioning intensified in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) Philippines Season 18 as the tournament reached its halfway mark, with Team Liquid PH and Team Falcons PH emerging as the teams to beat following Week 4 of the regular season.
Defending champion Team Liquid PH maintained its hold on the top spot after handing ONIC Philippines a crucial 2-0 defeat on Day 2. The victory improved the Cavalry to 6-1 with a league-best +11 game differential, allowing them to stay ahead of the pack with six points.
Team Falcons PH continued its steady climb up the standings and pulled level with Team Liquid on points after securing a pair of victories during the week. Falcons swept AP.Bren, 2-0, before outlasting Aurora Gaming PH, 2-1, to improve to 6-1 and strengthen its case as a legitimate title contender.
The biggest casualty of the week was ONIC Philippines. After entering Week 4 in second place, the Super Family fell to Team Liquid and slipped to third with a 5-2 record.
Smart Omega, meanwhile, bolstered their playoff bid with back-to-back wins. Omega opened the week with a 2-1 triumph over Twisted Minds PH before edging TNC Pro Team, 2-1, to climb to fourth place with four points.
Aurora Gaming PH and TNC Pro Team remain in the thick of the postseason race despite contrasting results. Aurora swept AP.Bren, 2-0, before falling to Falcons, while TNC shut out Twisted Minds, 2-0, but came up short against Smart Omega. Both squads sit on three points, with Aurora holding fifth place and TNC sixth via tiebreakers.
Meanwhile, AP.Bren's difficult season continued after suffering losses to Aurora and Falcons. The Hive dropped to 1-6 and remained seventh in the standings, while Twisted Minds PH stayed winless through seven matches after defeats to Smart Omega and TNC, leaving them at the bottom of the table.
Week 5 of MPL PH Season 18 returns Friday, September 18, with Team Liquid Philippines versus TNC Pro Team at 5 p.m. followed by Smart Omega versus Aurora Gaming PH at 7:30 p.m.
