Torre takes 1-month leave, mulls retiring

MANILA, Philippines — After being flagged for vehicle misuse on the EDSA busway, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) general manager Nicolas Torre III has volunteered to take a one-month leave from public office effective yesterday.

MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said Torre first approached him, saying he is set to retire from public service.

After their talk, Artes said Torre decided to take the leave.

Torre will not be receiving pay during his one-month leave, according to Artes.

“I have full trust and confidence in GM Torre as far as his work is concerned. The MMDA respects General Torre’s decision and wishes him well during his period of leave to give him sufficient time to reflect,” Artes said.

He said Torre contributes immensely to the work in the MMDA, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the agency.

“His commitment to public service and contributions have supported the leadership and administration of the MMDA,” Artes said.

Last week, Torre admitted that the MMDA-marked sport utility vehicle caught using the EDSA busway belongs to him.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) had fined him P14,000 for traffic violations, including the illegal use of the EDSA busway, tampering of license plates and the unauthorized use of blinkers.

Artes said they are leaving the investigation of Torre to the LTO.

“No official, regardless of position or rank, is exempt from traffic laws and policies enforced to maintain order on major thoroughfares,” Artes said.

The LTO earlier revoked the license of Torre’s driver for operating the SUV customized as an official MMDA vehicle.
