Canino eyes WGM title

MANILA, Philippines — Ruelle Canino is tipped as the Philippines’ next chess Woman Grandmaster.
The 18-year-old from Cagayan de Oro will have a shot at it as she sees action in the 7th ASEAN Individual Championships slated Nov. 2-10 at the Asenso Misamis Occidental Recreational and Aquamarine Park where the solo champion clinches an outright WGM title.
Canino actually came eerily close at snaring it in this same tournament last year but fell short and wound up second to claim WIM title instead.
The FEU player is currently on a European campaign along with Janelle Mae Frayna, the first and only Filipina WGM to date, and Jan Jodilyn Fronda in preparation for next month’s World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
She is also expected to see action in the Misamis Occidental Philippines International Championship on Nov. 10-17 also at the AMORAP.
