CELJEM Golf Team makes rousing debut with first runner-up trophy in Davao tourney
CEBU, Philippines — The newly-formed CELJEM Golf Team bannered by Engr. Jerry Maratas, Atty. Gaudioso Melendez, Engr. Leslie Anthony Molina, and Engr. Romeo Aguilon Jr. made an impressive debut by securing first runner-up honors in Division B of the Recovery Championship 2026 last August 15-16 at Rancho Palos Verdes Golf Club and South Pacific Golf Club in Davao City.
Held as part of the annual Kadayawan Festival, the fifth edition of the prestigious event attracted 388 golfers from over 100 teams across the country. The participants were grouped into two senior divisions - A and B and four regular divisions - A B, C, and D. Each team was composed of four players.
Maratas, who is also the longtime president of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA), delivered a crucial performance on the final day. He scored 48 Molave points, equivalent to six-over-par, at South Pacific Golf Club to help CELJEM secure the podium finish.
Aguilon was the team’s most consistent performer, posting 42 points on the opening day and 47 points in the final round. Molina contributed scores of 31 and 35 points, while Melendez added 29 and 32 points.
CELJEM finished the two-day tilt with a total of 301 points - enough to claim the first runner-up trophy in the highly competitive Division B.
The closely contested division was decided only after the final flight had completed play, adding drama and excitement to the tournament’s conclusion.
