Visayas Grid under yellow alert — NGCP

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas grid under yellow alert status due to forced outages at major power plants and restricted supply imports.
In a statement on Sunday, August 16, the NGCP said that the alert level will be in effect during peak hours from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Data from the system operator indicates an available capacity of 2,525 MW against a projected peak demand of 2,480 MW. A total of 892.6 MW remains unavailable to the regional power grid.
A yellow alert is declared when the grid's operating margin drops below the threshold required to meet the transmission network’s contingency requirements.
While a yellow alert indicates low reserve levels, it does not automatically mean rotational power interruptions will occur unless further generation capacity drops.
According to the grid operator, several key factors led to the declaration of a yellow alert in the Visayas grid.
These include the unavailability of large coal plants TVI 1 and TVI 2, the emergency shutdown of CEDC 2, and limited power imports from Mindanao due to a maintenance outage at GNPK 2, all compounded by a high demand forecast.
The operator explained that a yellow alert is triggered whenever the operating margin falls short of meeting the transmission grid's contingency requirements.
On August 15, the Visayas grid was placed under a red alert.
