MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala will face an early acid test in the Mubadala DC Open, as she battles Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the first round of the WTA 500 tournament.

The Filipina tennis ace will take on the Chinese according to the draw released by the tournament early Sunday morning (Manila time).

Zheng has had an up-and-down season thus far, as she is currently ranked 123rd in the world.

But the Chinese tennister reached a career-high ranking of World No. 4. The 23-year-old has previously won five WTA titles, and has reached the finals of the Australian Open back in 2024.

On the other hand, Eala is currently ranked World No. 29.

Whoever wins the match will take on either Polish Magda Linette or Canadian rising star Leylah Fernandez.

The Filipina is returning to action following a well-deserved break after her historic run in Wimbledon earlier in the month.

According to the tournament, Eala will no longer see action in doubles.

Venus Williams will now team up with Diana Shnaider, and the pair will face Ulrikke Eikeri and Quinn Gleason in the first round.
