Golden Tigresses roar to finals in Shakey's Invitationals

MANILA, Philippines — Unbeaten University of Santo Tomas rolled into the finals with an easy 25-10, 25-19, 25-12 win over reigning NCAA champion Letran in the Shakey’s Collegiate National Invitationals Friday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
The Golden Tigresses waxed hot with a 15-point runaway in the first set and never looked back for a continuation of their preliminary dominance as the No. 1 team in the six-team field.
Team captain Regina Jurado led the way with 12 points on 11 hits as the España-based spikers arranged a titular showdown today against either Australia’s Southern Storm Melbourne or NCAA runner-up St. Benilde. The two squads were to clash at press time.
“Gusto namin magpatuloy ‘yung success ng UST dito,” said Jurado as UST looks for a hat trick of Shakey’s crowns after the Junior Golden Tigresses ruled the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball Invitational League (SGVIL) Rising Stars Cup and the just-concluded Juniors National Invitationals conquests.
Marga Altea top-scored with 13 points on four blocks, anchoring UST’s defensive masterclass with 11 total swats, while ace spiker Angge Poyos had 10.
Verenicce Colendra was the lone bright spot with seven points as no other player finished in double figures for the Lady Knights, who will go for the consolation bronze medal against the second-game loser today.
Meanwhile, Enderun Colleges drubbed Ho Chi Minh City Volleyball Club of Vietnam, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19, to salvage the fifth place in the classification match of the breakthrough Shakey’s tourney, which features foreign teams for the first time ever.
