Alas men in must-win SEA V Cup match vs Indonesia

Games Friday
(Candon City Arena)
2 p.m. — Myanmar vs Vietnam
5:30 p.m. — Indonesia vs Alas Pilipinas
MANILA, Philippines — Alas Pilipinas knew it is facing its worst finish in the history of men’s SEA V Cup.
The Filipinos are also aware there is still a sliver of chance they could avert it.
But it has to start in the must-win duel with the Indonesians, the three-time champions, in Friday’s continuation of SEA V Cup action at the Candon City Arena in Ilocos Sur.
The host nation dug itself a grave after falling to a much-improved Cambodia — the 2021 and 2023 Southeast Asian Games bronze and silver medal winner — in a heartbreaking 25-23, 28-30, 25-20, 25-22, 15-8 defeat Wednesday night.
Regardless of the result of the Cambodia-Indonesia duel, which was being played as of this writing, Alas would have no choice but to get a win to secure its tradition making the finals in all six legs it played in this annual meet.
If it happens, it would give Alas a chance at a third medal after a couple of bronzes two years ago and, if the stars align, an opportunity to make the finals for the very first time.
But that would be easier said than done as the Nationals are missing three key members of that historic World Championship campaign in Manila last year—Bryan Bagunas, Marck Espejo and Leo Ordiales.
In results Thursday, Thailand flattened Myanmar, 25-15, 25-16, 25-19, to sweep Pool B in two outings and claim a semis seat in this event organized by the host city Mayor Eric Singson and the Philippine Sports Commission.
