Alas men take on Cambodia to open SEA V-League campaign

MANILA, Philippines — Candon City rides the waves of its successful hosting of the AVC Women’s Cup last month as it stages another international event in the first of the two-legged SEA V-League Men’s tournament unfurling Wednesday at the Candon City Arena.
Alas Pilipinas will try to surpass its fourth-place finish in last year’s two legs as it clashes with Cambodia at 5 p.m. to usher in the five-day tournament, which comes more than a month after the AVC Women’s Cup was done there.
The Filipinos will take a break Thursday and plunge back into action versus last year’s second leg titlist Indonesia.
Alas’ best performance in this annual meet was third, which it had accomplished twice both two years ago.
It failed to replicate it a year ago when it fell in the battle for third place to Vietnam in the first leg also in Candon and Thailand in the second leg in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The Nationals are hoping for a better effort on this one.
But for them to do so, it would have to at least finish in the top two in their group to advance to the semis.
The other bracket is composed of last year’s first leg champion Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar.
With all six teams all accounted for, host Mayor Eric Singson and the whole Ilocos Sur city is excited to welcome all of them.
