Back to Palace: Benhur Abalos appointed Cabinet secretary

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Wednesday, July 8, named President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s longtime ally and former Interior secretary Benhur Abalos Jr. as Cabinet secretary.
Abalos is set to take his oath this afternoon, according to Palace press officer Claire Castro.
Abalos is expected to give strategic advice to Marcos on national, local and international political issues and serve as an intermediary between the president and local and national government agencies, organizations and sectoral groups.
Abalos served as secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government from 2022 to 2024 before he ran for senator on Marcos' slate in 2025 but lost the race.
