Embattled Tab Baldwin quits as Ateneo Blue Eagles coach

Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — The Tab Baldwin era is over for the Ateneo Blue Eagles men’s basketball team.

This after the controversial coach resigned as head coach on Monday.

In a press conference at the Ateneo main campus in Quezon City, Ateneo president Fr. Roberto Yap, SJ, announced that the school has accepted Baldwin’s resignation amid the ongoing government investigations into the deaths of players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

Baterbonia and Adili passed away last week in a drowning incident during the Blue Eagles team-building session in Aurora, news that sent shockwaves across Philippine sports.

Blue Eagles team manager Epok Quimpo has also stepped down from his post, as various fact-finding bodies have been formed to probe the training incident that claimed the lives of Baterbonia and Adili.

Baldwin thus ends a nine-year UAAP coaching stint highlighted by four championships (2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022) with Ateneo, including steering the Blue Eagles to a 14-0 sweep in the eliminations of the 2019 season.

Meanwhile, Yap said there is no decision yet on whether Ateneo will participate in UAAP Season 89 this year.

The Blue Eagles already withdrew from the rest of the ongoing Filoil Preseason Cup.
