Separate road accidents kill 3
CEBU, Philippines — Three people lost their lives in two separate road accidents in Cebu City over the weekend.
Two of them died in a vehicular collision along the Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR) at the South Road Properties at around 2:10 P.M. last Saturday, June 13.
The victims were identified as motorcycle rider Bernel Tenebro Navares, who was declared dead at the scene, and his passenger, Krystal Claire Mondares, who later died in the hospital.
Initial investigation revealed that a Ford Raptor driven by John Edryl Bacalangco Tabacon, 23, of Talisay City, and the motorcycle carrying the victims were traveling in opposite directions along the CSCR.
Tabacon said he was approaching an intersection when he noticed the motorcycle suddenly make a U-turn and enter his lane. He said he immediately swerved to the right and applied the brakes to avoid collision but was unsuccessful.
The impact threw both victims to the pavement. Emergency responders rushed Mondares to the Cebu City Medical Center, where she was declared dead on arrival.
Both vehicles sustained damage, although authorities have yet to determine the total cost of the losses.
The Cebu City Police Office continues to investigate the incident to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. Tabacon is expected to face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in double homicide.
In a separate incident, a 76-year-old woman died after being struck by a vehicle in Lower Bonbonan, Barangay Labangon, Cebu City, at around 1:20 A.M. last Friday, June 12.
The victim was identified as Ana P. Garcia, a resident of the area.
Based on the initial investigation conducted by the Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Cebu City Police Office, William Ygot Hortizano, 58, was driving a Toyota Avanza toward his residence when the accident occurred.
Police said Garcia was either crossing or walking along Bonbonan Road when she was hit by the vehicle. The impact caused her to fall and be dragged several meters.
Garcia was immediately brought to the Cebu City Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival by attending physician Dr. Nolie Kristoffer B. Gabia.
Hortizano was subsequently arrested and is facing a charge of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide as authorities continue their investigation into the incident. (CEBU NEWS)
