CANDON CITY, Ilocos Sur — The South Koreans are showing their relegation from the women’s Volleyball Nations League last year would be short-lived.

It was evident in South Korea’s first three matches in the AVC Volleyball Cup, where it won via straight sets over Kyrgyzstan Saturday, Uzbekistan the next day and host Alas Pilipinas Tuesday.

They’re so impressive that they’re the only team in this 12-nation, nine-day tournament that has yet to concede a single set.

And it was because of its resolve to reclaim the spot it lost in the VNL following its relegation a year ago.

“We will show fighting spirit,” said Korean spiker Kang Sohwi through an interpreter.

But for South Korea to get back at its old VNL place, it must start here where it would need to perform its best and win here, hoping to gain enough FIVB ranking points to climb the world ladder.

And based on the VNL’s Promotion-Relegation Process, South Korea must end up the highest-ranked country that did not participate in the 18-team VNL season by end of the prestigious international tilt.

If that happens, it will supplant the 18th and last-placed squad from this year’s VNL cast.

To date, the former World Championship and Olympic bronze winner is 33rd in the world and if the stars align, nothing is impossible.
