MANILA, Philippines —   Former police lieutenant colonel Rafael Dumlao III has maintained his innocence over the 2016 kidnapping and murder of South Korean businessman Jee Ick-joo.

Dumlao was transferred yesterday to the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City from the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center at Camp Crame.

A police vehicle escorted by Criminal Investigation and Detection Group agents transported Dumlao to the NBP at around 8:15 a.m.

“I solved it. I attempted to rescue him,” Dumlao told ABS-CBN News, referring to Jee.

Jee died at Camp Crame in 2016.

Dumlao criticized the Supreme Court for affirming the Court of Appeals’ decision to overturn his acquittal.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said Dumlao’s arrest reflects the government’s commitment to hold people accountable for their crimes.

“Whether you were a former PNP chief or a former police officer, that is not a consideration. Even though Dumlao was one of their own, he was not put above the law,” Remulla said.
