15,000 doses of new HIV prevention drug expected
MANILA, Philippines — Around 15,000 doses of a new injectable HIV prevention drug will be available in the Philippines.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis drug lenacapavir, administered every six months, will be available in select health facilities, the Department of Health (DOH) said.
“You can get this for free in treatment hubs and other HIV service facilities, including public and private clinics,” said Jan Derek Junio, program manager for the DOH National HIV/AIDS and STI Prevention and Control Program.
“This type of drug helps prevent human immunodeficiency virus infection among those non-reactive or those without HIV,” Junio said.
A partnership between the DOH and US Department of State facilitated the lenacapavir donation.
Latest data showed 4,633 newly diagnosed HIV cases from January to March.
Cumulatively, 168,079 confirmed HIV cases have been reported since 1984.
