Manhunt on for SUV driver in cop’s hit-and-run

MANILA, Philippines — A manhunt is underway for the driver of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) who injured a member of the police Highway Patrol Group (HPG) along the southbound lane of the South Luzon Expressway in Muntinlupa City.

Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. yesterday ordered a massive manhunt for the unidentified motorist who fled after hitting Pat. Jeric Aya-ay who was traveling along SLEX on a motorcycle.

The incident, which was recorded on a dashcam from the vehicle of another motorist, sparked public anger.

“This kind of behavior has no place on the road. I am confident that the driver will be identified and be held responsible for the reckless driving that almost cost the life of a policeman,” Nartatez said in a statement.

Aya-ay was headed for work when a speeding SUV swerved toward the left side of the expressway and struck the policeman.

Aya-ay lost control and fell to the ground as his motorcycle tumbled several times.

Instead of stopping to help Aya-ay, the SUV driver sped off.

Nartatez ordered the HPG to coordinate with the Land Transportation Office (LTOI) to identify and file charges against the driver for reckless imprudence resulting in physical injuries and damage to property.

He also urged the people who have seen the incident to come forward as their information might lead to the suspect’s location.

Aya-ay told Camp Crame reporters that he failed to notice the SUV as he had guided other vehicles along the expressway to prevent another road crash.

HPG director Brig. Gen. Rommel Batangan said the SUV license plate could be fake as it has no record with the LTO.

LTO chief Markus Lacanilao said the motorist’s license would be suspended for 90 days.
