Bianca reaches weekend play at US Open

MANILA, Philippines — Gritty Bianca Pagdanganan fought back after a fumbling backside start to grind out a spot in the weekend play of the US Women’s Open Friday at the Riviera Country Club in California.
With a double-bogey at No. 10 and dropped shots on Nos. 14 and 15, Pagdanganan stumbled to four-over early in Round 2 but refused to quit, knocking down birdies on the 16th, 17th and fourth to improve to one-over.
Late bogeys on Nos. 7 and 9, however, dragged the two-time Olympian’s card to three-over 74 for the day, coming off a promising opening of 70. This brought her tally to two-over 144, two better than the 146 cutline.
The power hitting Pinay ace sits at joint 37th going to moving day, facing a six-shot deficit against co-leaders Alison Lee (68) and Ruoning Lin (69), who are at 138s.
Pagdanganan emerged as the lone Philippine survivor in the $12 million major championship as Pauline del Rosario and Fil-Japanese Yuka Saso took the exits.
Del Rosario shot a second-round 76 after a 78 to bomb out at 154 while Saso, representing Japan, carded a 74 following a 77 and missed the cut at 151.
