Rondina, Pons in final of AVC Beach Tour

MANILA, Philippines — Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons, popularly known as “SiPons,” stunned veterans Kongphopsarutawadee Worapeerachayakorn and Taravadee Naraphornrapat of Thailand, 21-17, 26-24, yesterday to barge into the final of the AVC Beach Tour’s 2nd Pingtung Open in Dapeng Bay in Chinese Taipei.
That propelled the Filipinas, who trounced Jasmine Fleming and Elizabeth Achin of Australia, 21-18, 33-31, in the quarters earlier, straight to the title match versus Olympic medalist Taliqua Clancy and fellow Aussie Stefanie Fejes at 4:30 p.m. today.
The Clancy-Fejes pair hurdled Asami Shiba and Reika Murakami of Japan, 18-21, 21-18, 15-8, to claim the first finals seat.
The feat ensured Rondina and Pons, bound for the Asian Games in Nagoya in September, of at least a silver medal, one of their best, if not their best, finish in that stage.
