Soldier killed in another Negros clash

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — An Army soldier was killed in a fresh encounter that occurred in Negros Occidental on Monday.
The firefight in Barangay Tamlang, Escalante City prompted villagers to evacuate for fear of getting caught in the crossfire.
The fatality, whose identity was withheld until his family is notified, was among a group of soldiers who responded to reports that a group of armed men suspected to be New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas were harassing residents.
The guerrillas were reportedly followers of alleged NPA leader Roger Fabillar, who was among 19 people killed in a series of clashes that broke out in the nearby town of Toboso in April.
The firefight lasted five minutes before the guerrillas fled, leaving behind some personal belongings at the scene of the encounter, according to 1/Lt. Fevie Fajardo, civil military operations chief of the Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion.
