P65 milllion earmarked for Mandaue park

CEBU, Philippines — The Mandaue City government has allocated P65 million for the development of Pajara Park, a major component of the city’s plan to expand public wellness spaces accessible to all Mandauehanons.

‎City Administrator Gonzalo Malig-on Jr., in an interview, said the project fulfills the inaugural promise of Mayor Thadeo Jovito Ouano to improve cleanliness and enhance the city’s overall livability.

‎The Pajara Park project, scheduled for this year, will be located beneath the second bridge in Barangay Umapad.

Designed as an open park, it will feature a children’s playground and dedicated areas where senior citizens can exercise and engage in wellness activities.

‎Malig-on said the city currently lacks a large open public park, highlighting the need for inclusive spaces that promote health and recreation.

‎“I think people really need this—for wellness,” he said.

‎He emphasized that Pajara Park is intended for all residents, particularly ordinary citizens who may feel intimidated by private leisure destinations.

‎While acknowledging the popularity of private developments such as Mandani Bay, Malig-on said the city wants to ensure that everyone has access to quality public spaces.

‎“Gusto sad sa mayor nga naay kaadtuan ang mga ordinaryong tawo nga dili ma-intimidate sa mga private nga lugar,” Malig-on said.

‎Aside from open areas, the park will also feature a café, sound system, and restaurant.

‎Construction is expected to begin around August or September, with plans already finalized.

‎Malig-on added that the park forms part of a broader citywide beautification program, which includes the ongoing enhancement of skywalks through partnerships with the private sector, as well as improvements to center islands along Ouano Avenue and UN Avenue.

‎“These are things that haven’t happened for many years,” he said.

‎He noted that people of all ages are drawn to open spaces where they can relax and enjoy leisure time.

Drawing inspiration from other countries, Malig-on said open parks often become vibrant community hubs where people gather for various activities.

‎"If you go to other countries, daghan kaayo og open parks magsayaw sayaw ang mga tao," Malig-on said.

‎He said the city envisions Mandaue as a “wellness city,” with more open parks, skywalks, landscaped center islands, and shared spaces that contribute to a healthier and more vibrant urban environment. (CEBU NEWS)
