VP Sara gets impeachment summons

MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte has been served the Senate's impeachment summons and received the articles of impeachment, her office confirmed on Wednesday, May 20.
The Office of the Vice President said the documents arrived at "approximately 10:40 AM" on Wednesday. It gave no further details and did not say how Duterte would respond.
Duterte has until June 1 to respond, as May 30, the tenth day, falls on a Saturday, Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano said during the Senate plenary session on Wednesday.
The deadline cannot be extended. If Duterte misses it, the Senate will enter a plea of not guilty on her behalf and the trial will proceed.
The vice president had skipped all House hearings that were held during the clarificatory phase of the impeachment proceedings. Her defense team said at the time that Duterte preferred to answer the allegations against her in the Senate.
Senators on Monday convened the impeachment court and directed the Office of the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms to issue the writ of summons for Duterte.
The actual impeachment trial will likely take place in June.
