'High emotions': PNP braces for protests as Senate opens impeachment court
MANILA, Philippines — Police are bracing for a tense opening day at the Senate impeachment court, with groups on both sides of Vice President Sara Duterte’s case expected to gather as proceedings begin Monday, May 18.
Philippine National Police chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police expects "high emotions" from groups on both sides of the issue, with security reinforced around the Senate building in Pasay City and other convergence points nationwide.
"We expect high emotions from the supporters and this is the part when police presence is needed to maintain peace and order," Nartatez said in a statement Monday.
"The goal is always to ensure that all activities will start and end peacefully," he added.
The Senate is convening as an impeachment court after the House transmitted the articles of impeachment against Duterte to the chamber on the night of Wednesday, May 13. The transmittal came shortly before gunfire was heard at the Senate complex. Facing an International Criminal Court warrant, Sen. Bato dela Rosa was able to leave the premises in the hours that followed.
Outside the Senate compound Monday, protesters have gathered to call for a manhunt for Dela Rosa and demanding accountability from Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano over Dela Rosa’s departure.
Authorities are also monitoring possible demonstrations in Metro Manila and Davao City, the Duterte family’s bailiwick.
Nartatez said police units would remain on standby while respecting the public’s right to peaceful assembly. — with a report from Martin Ramos
