CHED to receive position papers on reframed GE curriculum

MANILA, Philippines — Position papers on the reframed general education curriculum will be received by the Commission on Higher Education until June 15.
The CHED has so far received 256 position papers from higher education institutions, CHED Office of Programs and Standards Development director Jimmy Catanes said Wednesday.
Implementation of the reframed GE curriculum has been deferred to 2028 as officials seek further review and consultations with stakeholders.
Members of academe yesterday welcomed the postponement.
General Education Movement initiator Jonathan Geronimo said the deferral demonstrates the growing collective resistance against the proposed reduction of GE units, from 36 to as few as 18.
Recommendations of universities will be considered in finalizing the reframed GE curriculum, CHED Chairperson Shirley Agrupis said.
“The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines wants it to be more flexible, as it should not be a one-size-fits-all reframed curriculum,” Agrupis said.
Tuition hikes
Meanwhile, the CHED will review 480 applications for tuition increase amid the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations’ appeal.
The Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations or COCOPEA earlier raised concerns over reports that the CHED would issue a “blanket denial” of all pending tuition hike petitions filed by private colleges and universities.
“We agreed that we will study the data, and we’ll come back to them this week,” Agrupis said.
