Transport strike continues

MANILA, Philippines — Some jeepney drivers served commuters while the government offered free rides in Metro Manila on the second day of Manibela’s transport strike.

Members of the transport group yesterday staged a protest in Pasig, calling for lower fuel prices, the abolition of the oil deregulation law and suspension of excise and value-added taxes on petroleum products.

In Caloocan, several jeepneys operated, while the Malabon city government deployed vehicles to key routes to avoid disrupting transport groups not joining the strike.

Four buses of the National Bureau of Investigation are offering free rides along Philcoa in Quezon City to Lawton and Monumento to Pasay Rotonda.

Manibela and other transport groups are staging a three-day strike to express their dissatisfaction with the service contracting program and other measures aimed at cushioning the impact of soaring fuel prices.
