MANILA, Philippines — Former Tourism Secretary Ma. Esperanza Christina Garcia-Frasco on Wednesday, March 18, took her oath as presidential adviser for Sustainable and Resilient Communities in a ceremony at Malacañang Palace.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. administered the oath and congratulated Frasco on her appointment.

He said her experience working with local communities would be key in implementing programs that strengthen climate resilience and sustainable development across the country.

The Frasco-led initiative is tasked with guiding initiatives that promote sustainable development, enhance disaster resilience and strengthen community-based programs nationwide.

Frasco’s appointment comes days after she was relieved as head of the Department of Tourism. Undersecretary Verna Buensuceso will temporarily lead the tourism department.

During her time at the DOT from 2022 to 2026, Frasco oversaw programs aimed at supporting tourism enterprises and local partnerships.

Her tenure also drew criticism over promotional materials that featured her image, which she later ordered removed.

Despite the controversies, the department recorded several milestones, including the hosting of the Terra Madre Asia and the Pacific event and the introduction of the Michelin Guide in the Philippines.

Before joining the national government, Frasco served as mayor of Liloan, Cebu from 2016 to 2022. She also taught law at the University of San Carlos School of Law and worked as a senior associate at Romulo Law Offices.

She earned her Juris Doctor degree from Ateneo Law School and a Bachelor of Science in Management, major in Legal Management, from Ateneo de Manila University. She passed the Philippine Bar in 2007.
