MANILA, Philippines — American nationals in the Philippines have been advised to be cautious of possible protest actions or demonstrations amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

In a message posted on its official Facebook page yesterday, the United States embassy in Manila said such activities can happen in various locations.

“Following the launch of combat operations in Iran, Americans worldwide are advised to remain vigilant, maintain heightened situational awareness, and practice good personal security measures,” the advisory read.

“Demonstrations may take place in the Philippines, including in the vicinity of the US Embassy,” the “Message to US Citizens” said.

The embassy said American citizens “should avoid political demonstrations. Foreign nationals found engaging in a protest could be considered in violation of their immigration status.”

“Exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, as even peaceful rallies/demonstrations have the potential to turn violent without warning. Follow instructions from local authorities,” the advisory added.

US nationals were also advised to “follow local media and government sources for updates on possible public demonstrations, including information on disruptions to traffic or public services.”

The US embassy likewise called on American citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (step.state.gov) to receive alerts and make it easier to locate them in an emergency. — Helen Flores
