MANILA, Philippines — Fugitive tycoon Atong Ang is not in Cambodia, an official from its capital Phnom Penh said.

The spokesperson for Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, issued a statement February 6 effectively denying earlier reports that the tycoon is in Cambodia.

"According to an official report from the Immigration General Department of the Ministry of the Interior of Cambodia, there is no record of Charlie Tiu Hay Ang's entry or exit at any Cambodian border checkpoints," the ministry's spokesperson statement read.

"This clarification is issued to dispel recent media reports suggesting that Charlie Tiu Hay Ang may be hiding in Cambodia, while a team of Philippine police officers had been dispatched to search for him," the statement added.

In a report from the Philippine News Agency, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said that he believes that Ang is still in the Philippines.

Remulla earlier speculated that Ang is allegedly hiding in Cambodia, citing information that gaming operations in the Philippines had ceased and later shifted there.

The information, according to Remulla, came from the self-proclaimed whistleblower Julie Patidongan, who bared the alleged location of the "missing sabungeros" who have been missing since 2021.

Ang has outstanding warrants of arrest in two courts in Region IV-A, over the case of missing cockfight enthusiasts.

All of Ang's co-accused are already in the court's jurisdiction as of January, except for him.
