Former Comelec spox James Jimenez dies at 52
MANILA, Philippines — Former Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesperson James Jimenez has died at the age of 52 on Wednesday, January 28.n:
Jimenez served as the Comelec spokesperson for 15 years, from 2006 until his retirement in 2022.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the Comelec extended its condolences to his family.
“Jimenez holds the rare distinction of being the longest-serving and youngest spokesperson in government at the time of his appointment,” the Comelec said.
The Comelec mourned Jimenez’s passing, saying that he had helped bring the commission into the digital era.
“He helped bridge the communications gap by pioneering the official social media channels of the Commission, giving the public a direct avenue in conveying their queries and concerns,” the commission said.
“He championed accuracy, transparency, and accessibility, often translating legal and technical matters into language the public could understand. In doing so, he strengthened public trust in the electoral process and modeled how principled communication can serve democracy,” it added.
The commission did not disclose the cause of Jimenez’s death.
