Makati, Quezon City named A-list cities for climate action

MANILA, Philippines — The cities of Makati and Quezon City have been included in the A-list cities for 2025 by the environmental group Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for demonstrating climate leadership across the globe.

Both Metro Manila areas are part of the 120 cities globally that received an A score, which also include prominent landmarks such as New York City, Paris, London and Tokyo.

CDP, a non-profit organization based in six countries and founded in 2000, assessed 738 cities worldwide for last year’s round.

To earn an A grade, cities must meet certain leadership criteria, including disclosing environmental data through CDP’s internal platform, maintaining a comprehensive city-wide emissions inventory, publishing a climate action plan, completing a full risk and vulnerability assessment and setting a clear climate adaptation goal.

According to the CDP, data submitted by over 1,000 cities and 22,100 companies are being used by policymakers to make earth-positive decisions.

This is Makati’s third straight year earning an A, with Mayor Nancy Binay emphasizing that the CDP’s score reflects the city’s efforts in achieving climate resilience.

“By sharing our environmental data and progress with the global community, we hold ourselves accountable and contribute to the collective effort to address climate change,” Binay said in a statement yesterday.

Meanwhile, Quezon City is the first city in the Philippines to receive the distinction in 2020. It was also named an A-list city in 2023.
