MANILA, Philippines — Rep. Romeo Acop (2nd District, Antipolo) died on Saturday, December 20. He was 78.

In a statement Sunday, December 21, Acop's friend, House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Rep. Ronaldo Puno, confirmed the late congressman's death.

According to Puno, Acop had a heart attack.

"Sadly, he has really passed on. He had his successful kidney transplant last November 28. He was recovering well and he was up and about. We were excited for his imminent return to us," Puno told Philstar.com in a message.

According to a report of the Rizal police, it was around 10:12 pm when Acop was found lying on the floor by his youngest child, Karla Marie Acop, and his security aide, Pat Frank Louie Pastrana.

Acop was then rushed to the Assumption Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 10:56 p.m.

It could be recalled that Acop first raised alarms over "Mary Grace Piattos" and other suspicious names found on acknowledgment receipts on the confidential funds of Vice President Sara Duterte.

He also challenged the late Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Undersecretary Maria Catalina Cabral on her knowledge of Executive Order No. 124, the 1987 law establishing the DPWH charter.

Acop argued that a failure to understand these fundamental legal processes directly contributed to the agency's inability to detect and stop "ghost" flood control projects. — with reports from Dominique Nicole Flores
