MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Wilma maintained its strength while hovering over the coastal waters of Eastern Samar yesterday, with landfall expected over either Eastern Samar or Northern Samar last night.

As of 4 p.m. yesterday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) plotted the center of Wilma over Can-avid, Eastern Samar, with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 55 kph. The tropical system is almost stationary, with strong winds extending up to 180 kilometers from its center.

Authorities warned of possible heavy rainfall and strong winds as Willma moves westward across the Visayas before it emerges over the Sulu Sea.

PAGASA also said Northern Palawan may be affected by tomorrow morning.

Despite moving across land, Wilma is forecast to remain a tropical depression, though dry air from the northeast monsoon may weaken it into a remnant low pressure area.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remained over parts of Luzon and the Visayas, including Sorsogon, Masbate, Romblon, Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental and other nearby islands.  — Jose Rodel Clapano
