'WIlma' set to make landfall in Eastern Visayas, Dinagat Islands

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Wilma may make landfall in Eastern Visayas or the Dinagat Islands by Friday night or Saturday morning, according to state meteorologists. 

In its 11 AM weather bulletin on Friday, December 5, PAGASA said that Wilma is currently located 235 kilometers east of Boroangan City, Eastern Samar. It currently packs maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center, and gustiness of up to 55 km/h. It is currently moving west southwestward. 

Wilma is set to traverse Visayas until Sunday before emerging over the Sulu Sewa and passing over northern Palawan by Monday.

Strong winds due to northeast monsoon

PAGASA said the northeast monsoon will bring strong to gale-force winds over much of Luzon and the Visayas, including areas outside the cyclone warning.

PAGASA has hoisted a gale warning across several localities, and warned coastal of high waves in the following: 

  • Up to 5.5 m: The northern and eastern seaboards of Catanduanes; the seaboards of Northern Samar.
  • Up to 5.0 m: The northern and eastern seaboards of Polillo Islands, Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur; the eastern seaboards of Albay and Sorsogon.
  • Up to 4.5 m: The eastern seaboards of Isabela, Aurora, northern mainland Quezon, and Eastern Samar; the seaboards of Batanes, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur.
  • Up to 4.0 m: The eastern seaboards of Dinagat Islands and Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands.
  • • Up to 3.5 m: The remaining seaboards of Ilocos Region.
  • Up to 3.0 m: The eastern seaboards of Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental; the seaboards of Zambales and Kalayaan Islands.
  • Up to moderate to rough seas over the following coastal waters:
  • Up to 2.5 m: The western seaboards of Bataan, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island, and Palawan; the seaboards of Cuyo Islands; the western seaboard of Antique; the southern seaboard of Davao Oriental and Davao Occidental.
  • Up to 2.0 m:  The remaining seaboards of Palawan, Quezon, Camarines Sur, and Antique; the seaboards of Romblon, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, and Aklan; the northwestern seaboard of Masbate including Burias Islands.
