Lipa archbishop Garcera assumes CBCP leadership

MANILA, Philippines — Lipa Archbishop Gilbert Garcera formally assumed the presidency of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Monday, December 1, succeeding Kalookan Bishop Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David.
Garcera was elected during the CBCP’s 130th plenary assembly in Bohol in July 2025.
The CBCP president leads the conference, directs its collective efforts, and serves as its principal representative. He also presides over the Permanent Council, which manages day-to-day operations and ensures that decisions made during the plenary assembly are carried out, according to Catholic media agency CBCP News.
As president, Garcera likewise acts as the official delegate of the Philippine Catholic Church in national and international engagements, including meetings with the Vatican and with other bishops’ conferences worldwide.
Alongside the transition, the CBCP’s vice presidency also changes hands. Pasig Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara will be replaced by Zamboanga Archbishop Julius Tonel.
