AFP: Retired generals oppose destabilization, show commitment to Constitution

MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) welcomed the manifesto of support and solidarity from the Association of General and Flag Officers (AGFO), saying that the retired leaders’ stance against destabilization reaffirms the military’s commitment to the Constitution.
In a statement on Sunday, November 30, the AFP said the expression of confidence from veteran officers strongly validates the military’s core values.
“This expression of confidence from leaders who dedicated the prime of their lives to service deeply affirms the shared commitment of both active and retired officers to uphold the Constitution, respect civilian authority, and preserve the professionalism of the military institution,” the AFP’s statement read.
The military also said the manifesto serves as a reminder that "unity within the ranks, past and present, remains one of the AFP's greatest strengths."
“The reaffirmation of nonpartisanship and rejection of destabilization reinforces the enduring principles that guide every soldier, airman, sailor, and marine, regardless of status in service,” the AFP said.
“The unified voice of our retired and active leaders reaffirms that the AFP remains a pillar of stability and a steadfast guardian of democracy,” it added.
The AFP referred to AGFO’s statement on November 29, which denounced calls for destabilization.
The group said it “condemns any calls for the AFP to engage in unconstitutional acts or military adventurism.”
“We strictly invoke Article XVI, Section 5 of the Constitution, which mandates that the Armed Forces shall be insulated from partisan politics and that no member of the military shall engage, directly or indirectly, in any partisan political activity, except to vote,” the manifesto read.
“We express our absolute vote of confidence in the AFP leadership. We commend their steadfast refusal to be swayed by partisan interests and their firm resolve to keep the AFP united, professional, and loyal to the Constitution,” it added.
