US Embassy debunks false sign outside Olongapo apartment
MANILA, Philippines — The United States Embassy has clarified that a residential apartment in Barangay Barretto, Olongapo City, is not part of its official premises after a sign appeared on the property claiming it was.
"We confirm that this is not an official U.S. government property and understand that the sign has been removed," US Embassy spokesperson Jameson DeBose said Tuesday, November 25.
Pictures of the sign outside the apartment gate circulated on social media yesterday. It warned that anyone entering without authorization would face "persecution under international law." A flag of the United States also hung near the entrance.
The US Embassy in Manila, located along Roxas Boulevard in Ermita, is the only official American diplomatic mission in the Philippines. It maintains no permanent facilities outside Metro Manila aside from the US Consular Agency in Lahug, Cebu City.
