Bishops stress loyalty to Constitution, not personalities

MANILA, Philippines — Metro bishops urged the public not to resort to "extra-constitutional" acts to solve the country's problems.
In a pastoral letter released on Saturday, November 16, Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula urged the public, including the police and the military, to uphold the rule of law.
"We must always adhere to the rule of law and resist any calls for extra-constitutional means to solve our problems," Advincula's pastoral statement read.
"Our loyalty must be to our country and its democratic principles, not to persons, and certainly not to ambition," it added.
He also emphasized that in public discussions and large gatherings, people should let reason guide them rather than emotion.
Advincula also urged the military and police to uphold the Constitution, highlighting their duty to safeguard national stability and defend democratic institutions.
"To those in the military and police force, and all in positions of public service, I appeal to you to stay faithful to your oath to the flag and our country and not to any particular personality. Your fidelity to the Constitution is vital for the stability and integrity of our republic," Advincula's pastoral statement read.
"The challenges we face demand not just pragmatic solutions but a profound spiritual response. I plead with everyone to examine our consciences, reform our lives, and live according to God's will," it added.
Cubao Bishop Elias Ayuban, meanwhile, sent a letter to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on November 14, saying that the diocese "stands" in the defense of democratic institutions.
"We, the clergy, consecrated men and women, and lay faithful of the Diocese of Cubao, wish to express our support and solidarity with you and the men and women of the Armed Forces of the Philippines as you continue to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law," Ayuban's letter to the AFP read.
Anti-corruption protests are set to start on Sunday, November 16, with the religious group Iglesia ni Cristo rallying at the Quirino Grandstand until November 18.
On November 30, another nationwide rally is set to commence, similar to the Trillion Peso March on September 21. — with reports from CBCP News
