Over 300 Filipino human trafficking victims to be repatriated

MANILA, Philippines — The government is set to repatriate 346 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who fell victim to human trafficking in Myanmar scam hubs, the Palace announced on Tuesday, November 11.
More than 200 Filipino victims in Myanmar have requested repatriation back in October, unveiling the gravity of human trafficking in the region and the proliferation of illegal scam hubs.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro made the announcement in a press briefing.
“Bibiyahe na bukas, November 12, lulan ng isang chartered flight mula sa Bangkok, Thailand pauwi ng Pilipinas ang 346 na OFWs na naging biktima ng human trafficking,” Castro said.
(Tomorrow, in a chartered flight from Bangkok, Thailand, 346 OFWs who were victims of human trafficking will come home to the Philippines.)
Various government agencies, including the Department of Migrant Workers and the Department of Foreign Affairs, will help facilitate the repatriation of these OFWs, Castro said.
For the past two years, more than a thousand Filipinos have fallen victim to human trafficking schemes.
Many of these victims were rescued from scam hubs scattered across Southeast Asia.
Myanmar has been a hotbed for these scam hubs and human trafficking operations. In October, Myanmar authorities raided the KK Park in Myawaddy Township. At least 66 Filipinos were rescued from KK Park.
KK Park operated very similarly from the Philippine’s offshore gaming hubs, which often served as a front for scam centers and human trafficking operations.
